A heavy snowstorm forecasters didn't see coming until they "looked out the window” mired the cities of the Northeast in half a foot of snow Wednesday. President Carter proposed salary increases of 22 percent Wednesday for top federal officials, including Congress, the Cabinet and judges. The increase also applies to his own pension. The raise would boost Cabinet salaries from $69,630 a year to about $84,000. Congressional salaries would go from 560,662 to about 574,000. President-elect Ronald Reagan tapped Utah education official Terrel H. Bell on Wednesday to be education secretary The arrest of a Dawson County, Ga. man on charges of driving with a revoked license has led to the discovery of nearly 51 million in counterfeit $20 bills U. S. Treasury agents called the counterfeit discovery "one of the biggest" ever uncovered. People are being asked to sign up today and Friday to have their female dogs spayed. Available scholarships include Incentive Scholarships for students in grades 6-11 who have not previously won a Pre-College scholarship; Voice and Organ Scholarships open to pre-college or college age students who are Spartanburg County residents; Bowed String and Piano Scholarships for residents of and students in Spartanburg city, county or day schools; Orchestral and Band Instrument Scholarships for pre-college students in Spartanburg County; and Piano Performance Camp Scholarships. The Board will go into executive session at 7:30 and them resume their regular meeting about 8:30. Kudzu Fire The Columbus Volunteer Fire Department was called to a brush ire near the home of Alonzo Petty Tuesday at 9 p.m. in the Stony Knoll area. A large area of kudzu burned, but no other damage was reported. Tryon Council Meets Monday The Tryon Town Council will meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Town Hall. Landrum Sports Banquet Jan. 16th The Landrum High School Fall Sports Banquet will be held Friday. Jan 16th at 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
